Silver Collection Side Table - Square
John Caldwell is quick to admit that he's had a lot of luck in his design life, but anyone who sells a design to Brown Jordan at the age of 19, has to have a handful of talent to boot. His square Silver Collection Side Table (1999), like all the items in the Silver Collection, is crafted from teak that is harvested from managed plantations where renewal of this valuable resource is assured. The teak is kiln-dried and left unfinished for a low maintenance natural surface that will acquire a silvery patina over time. (While this appears to be the source of the collection's name, in truth, the Silver Collection was named for Caldwell's manufacturer, a company that celebrated its silver anniversary at the time these pieces were first produced.) In 1999, this commercial-quality Collection received the Pinnacle Award, presented by the American Society of Furniture Designers. Caldwell's Silver Collection also includes a chaise, tables and chairs. Made in U.S.A.

John Caldwell
John Caldwell got his first break as a furniture designer in Los Angeles in the 1950s. In the early days, he freelanced for Brown Jordan, a company that built steel army cots in kwanset huts during World War II and then went on to produce high-design modern outdoor furniture by Caldwell, Walter Lamb (who salvaged bronze tubing from sunken battleships off Hawaii for his pieces), and Van-Keppel Green (the partnership that created the majority of the patio furniture for John Entenza's Arts and Architecture case study homes). Since selling Brown Jordan his Mai Tai design in 1957 at the age of 19, Caldwell has designed outdoor furniture, office furniture and accessories, umbrellas, lighting, and ceiling fans for markets in the United States, China, Indonesia, and Mexico. He also taught design for twenty years at various southern California colleges including Long Beach...
